What people eat here, and when
Between coast and mountains everything changes in half an hour's drive: bluefish and citrus below, cheeses and meat above. A short guide to what to look for, in the right season.
Breakfast
Granita with brioche col tuppo: almond, mulberry, lemon or coffee. It's breakfast, not a snack, and the brioche is for dunking. It's the most Sicilian thing you'll do on holiday, and it's the one that costs least.
From the sea
Bluefish — anchovies, sardines, mackerel — and swordfish in season. Home cooking here is simple: pasta con le sarde, involtini, swordfish alla ghiotta.
From the mountains
Stretched-curd Nebrodi provola, Nebrodi black pork, ricotta fresh in the early morning, porcini mushrooms in autumn.
The citrus
This is citrus-grove country: lemons and oranges from November to April. Lemon gelato means something different here than elsewhere.
Related destinations: Capo d'Orlando, Nebrodi Park.
Stay in Capo d'Orlando
A base in the centre — and everything else becomes a day trip.
The port for the Aeolians is 45 minutes away, the Nebrodi right behind. Breakfast served early for dawn departures.
