Panarea

Panarea — Punta del Corvo

Anyone who writes Panarea off as an island of aperitifs has never set foot on the summit trail: from the top you see Basiluzzo, Lisca Bianca, Dattilo and the cone of Stromboli all at once.

The route

You leave the centre of San Pietro heading west, up mule tracks and steps between dry-stone walls, then open trail through the maquis. The path is marked but narrow in places, with tall grass at summer's end: long trousers, not shorts.

When to go

Avoid mid July–August in the central hours: no shade, rock that radiates heat. Spring and early autumn are the right seasons — in May the island is in flower and the houses still shuttered.

Water and supplies

There is nothing on the trail. Two litres each, a hat, and if you descend towards late afternoon, a light headlamp: at sunset the last stretch under the trees darkens fast.

Stay in Capo d'Orlando

A base in the centre — and everything else becomes a day trip.

The port for the Aeolians is 45 minutes away, the Nebrodi right behind. Breakfast served early for dawn departures.
